Do you want to live righteously before God?
Perhaps many people would answer like this: “If I live a more virtuous life, pray more, and serve more faithfully, won't God regard me as righteous?” However, Romans chapter 10 clearly tells us that zeal itself cannot make us righteous. The people of Israel had zeal for God, but without knowing the righteousness of God, they tried to establish their own righteousness.
Then who is righteous before God?
Romans chapter 10 proclaims,
“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”
Here, “the end” does not mean that the Law has disappeared, but that Jesus Christ Himself fulfilled the penalty for sin and the requirement of righteousness demanded by the Law. Because human beings cannot become righteous by themselves, God fulfilled all righteousness for us.
Jesus took upon Himself all the sins of the world by being baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. And by bearing those sins and shedding His blood and dying on the Cross, He paid the wages of sin, and by rising from the dead on the third day, He completed and guaranteed our salvation once and for all. Jesus’ baptism, Cross, and resurrection are not separate events from one another. Because He took upon Himself our sins through His baptism, His death on the Cross became the judgment for our sins; and because He rose again, He accomplished perfect salvation and gave us eternal new life.
Therefore, a person does not become righteous because his character is perfect, but becomes a sinless righteous person by accepting and believing in his heart the righteous work of God. He confesses, “I cannot keep the Law perfectly by my own strength, but the Lord has made me a sinless righteous person through the water, the blood, and the Spirit.” A righteous life begins with this confession. One does not first become righteous by striving to live righteously; rather, a person who has become righteous by believing in the righteousness of God lives righteously by that faith.
A righteous life is a life of proclaiming to others the gospel that one has heard and believed. Because someone was sent and preached the gospel, we were able to hear it; and because we heard it, we believed in our hearts and received salvation. Therefore, the life of a person who has been saved does not end with himself. He proclaims to others the gospel that he himself has heard and believed.
He proclaims the news that Jesus took upon Himself all sins through His baptism and completed salvation through the Cross and resurrection. A righteous life is not about living a life of displaying one’s own righteousness, but about living a life of giving thanks by believing in the gospel of the water and the Spirit that Jesus fulfilled, and of preaching this gospel of salvation. Only those who have received the remission of sins can live such a life.
Through this book, Romans Seen from the Perspective of the Gospel of the Water and the Spirit (II), we once again confirm that, in the gospel in which Jesus took upon Himself the sins of the world through the baptism He received from John, died on the Cross, and was resurrected, our old selves also died with Him and were raised with Him. The declaration that there is no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ is clearly testified to within the gospel of the water and the Spirit.
